I was teaching in a small town in Ohio where my third graders were excitedly waiting for the great day of giving gifts. Each day the children made something new – strings of popcorn, hand-made trinkets (小装饰品) and bells made from wallpaper, which we hung from the ceiling. One girl was just watching. I wondered what would happen to this child, once so happy, now so quiet. I hoped the festivities (庆祝活动) would please her. But nothing did. We made cards for parents, for sisters and brothers, for grandparents, and for each other. At home the students made fried marbles (玻璃球). So I made each of my students a little bag for carrying their fried marbles home. The day finally came. We were all excited as we exchanged the presents. But the girl just sat watching quietly. I had made a special bag for her. I wanted to see her smile. She opened the bag carefully. I waited, but she turned away. After school the children left. I was sitting down in a chair to catch my breath, when she came to me with a small white box in her hands. "For me?" I asked with a smile. She nodded. I opened the box. There inside, a fried marble hung from a golden chain. In a flash I knew – she had made it for her mother, the mother she would never see again, the mother who had died just three weeks before. I held out the chain. She took it in both her hands and put it on my neck. I whispered, "Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. She would have loved it." Neither of us could stop the tears. She ran into my arms. And for that moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest gift of all: herself. 50. The girl student became so quiet when other children were busy exchanging gifts because _______. A. she didn’t prepare any gift to send to others B. she had no idea what to give her teacher C. she disliked exchanging gifts with friends D. she was in deep sorrow for losing her mother 51. The underlined phrase “In a flash” can be replaced by “_______”. A. Quickly B. Finally C. Hopefully D. Happily 52. The best title of the passage probably is ________. A. Fried Marbles B. Lost Mother C. A Christmas Gift D. A Quiet Girl B Television has opened windows in everybodys life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of young people have seen the death and sufferings of a battle on TV. And the result has been a general loathing for war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, televisions influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world and that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesnt do funny things like the people on childrens programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. Thats the time it takes on the screen. 53. The underlined word “loathing” in the first paragraph refers to ______. A. preference B. faith C. dislike D. belief 54. The writer will probably agree that young people today _______. A. are willing to go to war to help those in trouble B. believe the violence they see is unacceptable C. often expect their teachers to do funny things in class D. have realized some advertisements lie to sell products 55. The main idea of the passage is that _______. A. people’s attitudes towards war have changed B. people all over the world follow state affairs C. the young are becoming less and less patient D. people’s life has changed a lot because of TV 56.The writer’s purpose of writing this passage can be ________. A. To persuade people to watch TV B. To discourage people from watching TV C. To state the influence of television objectively D. To show us that TV programmes are interesting C The possibility that pleasant smells might reduce pain has recently been suggested by new research. In a scientific study, doctors asked 20 men and 20 women to keep their hands in very hot water for as long as possible while breathing in different smells. As people believe that strong smells can affect the senses, volunteers were asked not to eat or drink for eight hours before the experiment began. During the experiment, volunteers were asked to take in pleasant smells such as vanilla(香草), and unpleasant smell such as durians(榴莲). The volunteers kept their hands in the water until it became too hot for them. When they could not bear the pain any more, they took their hands out of the water. Scientists are interested in whether the senses or smell is related to pain and whether men and women have the same senses. Now, the study has proved that for women, pleasant smells reduce pain. For men, there is no change. Dr Finkelstein has been studying smells since 1999. He says that scientists already have data from 40 volunteers. He adds that this year, scientists will test another 60 volunteers and will be in a better position to explain the results. One explanation is that women’s sense of smell developed long ago, and is linked to recognizing the smell of babies. Scientists used to believe that mothers recognized their children by sight only. Now, they have started to believe that the sense of smell also helps, but why pleasant smells do not reduce pain in men is a question still to be answered by scientists. 57. If 20 men and 20 women are asked to keep their hands in hot water while taking in some pleasant smells, ______. A. women may stand the
